The following terminals are covered: WYSE - WY30 WY50 WY50+ WY60 WY75 WY85 WY99gt WY120 WY150 WY160 WY185 WY350 Wy370 For the terminals above the following subjects are covered: 1. Physical port information - size, gender, name or number etc... 2. Pin information - description, direction, polarity, etc.. 3. Flow control - Hardware and Software 4. Additional port information. GENERAL WYSE PORT INFORMATION: 1. All wyse terminals are built with a 256 character buffer. 2. If Pin 6 (DSR) or Pin 8 (DCD) are held low, this will cause the terminal to not Transmit or not Receive. 3. When using a printer, Hardware handshaking is more reliable and faster than software handshaking. 4. Hardware handshaking is always Busy low / Ready high. 5. Signal ground is internally connected to frame ground on all Wyse terminal products. 6. RS232 communication can usually be established using Transmit data, Receive data, and Signal ground. ( Include the Hardware handshake line if using Hardware handshaking). Extra connections can cause communication problems if not connected properly. 7. All terminals use 1 start bit. 8. Software Handshaking is either Xon/Xoff (Ascii/Ansi personalities) or Xpc (Scan personalities). THIS TERMINALS ALLOWS THE USER TO SELECT THE MODEM/AUX PORTS AS BEING DATA/PRINTER OR PRINTER/DATA. MODEM PORT = DATA PORT. SELECTED IN SETUP BY MODEM RCV HANDSHAKE FIELD. NONE NO HANDSHAKING ON THE MODEM PORT. XON/XOFF XON/XOFF HANDSHAKING USED ON THE MODEM PORT. DTR DTR HANDSHAKING USED ON THE MODEM PORT. BOTH BOTH TYPES OF HANDSHAKING USED. NOTE: TO TURN ON XPC HANDSHAKE FOR PC TERM / PC GRAPHICS PERSONALITIES MODEM RCV HANDSHAKE FIELD MUST BE SET TO XON/XOFF AND XPC HANDSHAKE FIELD MUST BE SET TO ON. IF XPC HANDSHAKING = ON AND MODEM RCV HANDSHAKE = BOTH THEN XPC/DTR HANDSHAKING WILL OCCUR. MODEM PORT = PRINTER PORT. (DSR HANDSHAKE ALWAYS ACTIVE) SELECTED IN SETUP BY MODEM XMT HANDSHAKE FIELD. NONE DSR HANDSHAKING USED ON THE MODEM PORT. XON/XOFF BOTH TYPES OF HANDSHAKING USED. AUX PORT = DATA PORT. SELECTED IN SETUP BY AUX RCV HANDSHAKE FIELD. NONE NO HANDSHAKING ON THE AUX PORT. XON/XOFF XON/XOFF HANDSHAKING USED ON THE AUX PORT. DTR DTR HANDSHAKING USED ON THE AUX PORT. BOTH BOTH TYPES OF HANDSHAKING USED. NOTE: TO TURN ON XPC HANDSHAKE FOR PC TERM PERSONALITY AUX RCV HANDSHAKE FIELD MUST BE SET TO XON/XOFF AND XPC HANDSHAKE FIELD MUST BE SET TO ON. IF XPC HANDSHAKING = ON AND AUX RCV HANDSHAKE = BOTH THEN XPC/DTR HANDSHAKING WILL OCCUR. AUX PORT = PRINTER PORT. (DSR HANDSHAKE ALWAYS ACTIVE) SELECTED IN SETUP BY AUX XMT HANDSHAKE FIELD. NONE DSR HANDSHAKING USED ON THE AUX PORT. XON/XOFF BOTH TYPES OF HANDSHAKING USED. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: HIGH WATER MARK - SELECTABLE 192 / 128 / 64 CHARACTERS. LOW WATER MARK - DEPENDENT ON HIGH WATER MARK 64 / 32 / 16 CHARACTERS. MAX BAUD RATE - 38,400 MODEM AND 19,200 AUX PORT DATA BITS - 7 OR 8 STOP BITS - 1 OR 2 PARITY - NONE, ODD, EVEN, MARK OR SPACE. C O M M O N P R O B L E M S AND H E L P F U L H I N T S FOR SOLVING TERMINAL COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS. 1. XMT HANDSHAKE = ON WILL CAUSE THE TERMINAL TO STOP PROCESSING AND SHOULD ONLY BE SET TO ON IF YOUR SYSTEM SUPPORTS THIS FEATURE. ADDS, DATA GENERAL, AND PC GRAPHICS PERSONALITIES SHOULD NEVER HAVE XMT HANDSHAKE SET TO ON. 2. ALWAYS LOOK AT THE DIRECTION OF A PIN AND NOT THE SIGNAL NAME. TRANSMIT CAN BE EITHER AN OUTPUT OR AND INPUT DEPENDING ON THE PORT CONFIGURATION. 3. WHEN CABLING A PRINTER TO A TERMINAL FOLLOW THESE STEPS. 1. IF THE PRINTER PORT IS SERIAL, DETERMINE THE TYPE OF HANDSHAKING USED. HARDWARE HANDSHAKE IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED IF POSSIBLE. 2. IF THE PRINTER IS USING HARDWARE HANDSHAKING DETERMINE WHICH PIN IS CONTROLLING THE HANDSHAKE. THE SIGNAL MUST BE BUSY LOW / READY HIGH. 3. CHECK TO SEE IF THE PRINTER HAS A VARIABLE INPUT BUFFER LEVEL. IF IT DOES SETUP THE PRINTER TO HANDSHAKE AT THE LOWEST LEVEL. 4. BE SURE THAT THE TRANSMIT AND RECEIVE SIGNALS ARE CONNECTED CORRECTLY BETWEEN THE TERMINAL AND THE PRINTER. FOLLOW SIGNAL DIRECTIONS NOT NAMES. 5. CHECK TO INSURE CORRECT HANDSHAKING HAS BEEN SETUP FOR BOTH THE PRINTER AND MODEM PORTS. (NOTE: INCORRECT SETUP BETWEEN THE HOST SYSTEM AND THE TERMINAL MAY CAUSE BUFFERING PROBLEMS WHEN PRINTING). 4. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND THE TERMINAL ARE USING THE SAME HANDSHAKING. FOR EXAMPLE - SOME SYSTEMS, SUCH AS UNIX AND XENIX, CAN USE XOFF / XANY HANDSHAKING WHICH IS SIMILAR TO, BUT NOT THE SAME AS XON / XOFF HANDSHAKING. 5. THE MAXIMUM DISTANCE STANDARD FOR RS232 IS 50ft., BUT WITH GOOD SHIELDED CABLE THIS CAN BE EXTENDED FURTHER. 6. MOST MODEMS DEFAULT TO XON/XOFF FOR SOFTWARE HANDSHAKING. WHEN USING A MODEM AND SCAN CODE MODE, THE XON AND XOFF CODE VALUES MUST BE REPLACED WITH THE XPC ON AND OFF VALUES. 7. CONNECTING PIN 1 UP MAY CAUSE CURRENT FLOW BETWEEN THE TERMINAL AND THE OTHER DEVICE. IF YOUR DEVICE MUST HAVE INDEPENDENT SIGNAL AND FRAME GROUNDS ONLY CONNECT PIN 1 TO THE TERMINAL. 8. CONNECTING UP EXCESSIVE PINS CAUSES MORE PROBLEMS.
