Leading Customers and Partners Around Banking, Retail, Healthcare, and Education Champion Cloud Client Computing at VMworld 2010
As Cloud Computing and Desktop Virtualization Gain Momentum, More and More Customers Are Seeing Improvements in Security, Management, User Experience and TCO
SAN JOSE, Calif. –
08/31/2010 -
Today at VMworld 2010, Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today released details of some of their more innovative virtual desktop implementations as part of their participation at VMworld 2010. Wyse is currently appearing at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco, California, at Booth #521.
Cloud client computing combines thin and zero client computing, desktop virtualization, and unified communications, to form a powerful IT solution for business, government and institutions to reduce costs, improve security, compliance, mobility and productivity.
"The requirement to move to Windows 7 and new PC refresh cycles are driving rapid adoption of Cloud Computing and desktop virtualization by CIOs," said Maryam Alexandrian, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Channels at Wyse Technology. "Wyse zero, thin and cloud PCs make the ideal client for cloud computing as they deliver increased security, improved business agility, and lower TCO vs. traditional PCs. Wyse will be at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco presenting the best of Cloud Client Computing hardware and software solutions at the exhibit as well as the sessions."
"The combination of Wyse and VMware View™ provides formidable and innovative solutions for today's desktop virtualization market," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, End User Computing Products, VMware. "VMware and Wyse continue to team up to provide the best end user experience across a diverse set of devices while enabling our customers to cost effectively move to IT as a service and improve their client security."
At VMworld 2010, EMC Corporation will be demonstrating its solutions on Wyse thin and zero clients, as well as demonstrating mobile access to virtual desktops with the popular Wyse PocketCloud for iPad application. The first iOS and Android mobile application certified for VMware View by VMware, Wyse PocketCloud is in use by over 110,000 customers today.
"On the journey to the private cloud there are all sorts of different customer experiences that need to be addressed," said Chad Sakac, Vice President of VMware Strategic Alliance at EMC. "Wyse is a leader in the cloud client computing market and together we are developing joint solutions and reference architectures using EMC, VMware and Wyse technologies."
At Brown Shoe, the customer service call center, software development, distribution, purchasing and training teams all work on Wyse thin clients based on Wyse ThinOS along with Wyse TCX virtualization software to deliver excellent multimedia in a virtual environment. The VDI team uses Wyse Device Manager (WDM) software to manage the thin clients. VMware View delivers desktops as a managed service to these devices from the St. Louis data center, where 13 VMware vSphere™ hosts run up to 800 virtual desktops.
"Adopting virtual desktops using Wyse and VMware View makes so much sense just on the maintenance savings and increased productivity that we’ve seen in every implementation," according to Kevin Baldus, Manager of Client and Communication Services, Brown Shoe. "But we’ve also proven that VDI helps us respond more quickly to the changing needs of the business."
At the Manchester Essex Regional School District in Manchester, Massachusetts, crowded classrooms, leaky roofs and noisy computer labs are now a distant memory. A new building that houses Manchester Essex Regional Middle School and High School opened in September 2009 as a state-of-the-art green facility. It’s filled with features such as solar panels, modern ventilation systems, and light shelves that bounce light into dark classrooms while simultaneously dimming lights. Integral to the vision of making the building a model of sustainability and efficiency was a complete Green IT strategy, which included the installation of a virtual desktop infrastructure combining products from Wyse and VMware.
"We wanted technology that conserved power, optimized our use of space, simplified our IT infrastructure and maintenance, and enabled staff and students to be as productive as possible," according to Stephen Kwiatek, Network Administrator for the Manchester Essex Regional School District. "Today the staff is excited about how efficient and convenient our Wyse devices are. Even some of the students have shared with me how excited they are with our new computing solution."
Eastside Baptist Church and Christian School serves hundreds of families and more than 300 students in the greater Marietta, Georgia area. Until recently, the Eastside computing infrastructure was a mess. With system maintenance and PC updates and repairs, just keeping the system up and running required overtime and weekend work for Bill Bailey, Business Systems Administrator at Eastside. Bailey was spending 15-20 hours each week on PC repairs and troubleshooting. In what amounted to a five-week makeover, Eastside now has an updated, centralized IT system featuring VMware vSphere connecting to a total of 115 Wyse thin clients running Wyse ThinOS.
"Now we are moving toward having thin clients almost system-wide," said Bailey. "For any school on a tight budget, I'd wholeheartedly recommend VMware and Wyse Technology."
For Marist School in Atlanta, the value of high-performance Wyse products is two-fold. It helps the school deliver an outstanding education to students, and helps make the school an attractive choice for faculty, parents and students. The school's technology needs extend to more than 1,000 students. "Our technology is a highly-visible way for Marist to demonstrate its commitment to excellence," according to Fr. John Harhager, President of Marist School. "Prospective parents and teachers have complemented us on our technology or have indicated that it was a factor in making a decision to join Marist. Top technology such as the combination of Wyse Technology and VMware software helps us secure the best talent and advances our mission."
Regardless of the industry, more and more end users are seeing the benefits of cloud client computing. Whether it’s because of budget reasons owing to the hidden costs of PC maintenance, the security concerns inherent in PCs, or the flexibility brought to businesses through a more agile and virtual infrastructure, today’s enterprises see the cloud as the logical evolution of computing, and virtual desktops as the perfect complement to a cloud philosophy.
