InfoWorld 100 Awards Recognizes Kool Smiles for Implementation of Wyse Technology Virtual Clients to Deliver Safer, Better Patient Service

EHR Initiative Named One of the Top 100 IT Projects in the Nation for 2009

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing and client virtualization, and Kool Smiles, a network of local dentist offices providing quality dental care for children and families in underserved communities, today announced that Kool Smiles received top honors for its "Thin-Client EHR Initiative" from InfoWorld Magazine as part of their annual InfoWorld 100.  This award recognizes the top IT Projects of 2009.

Led by Chief Technical Architect, Mark Blomquist, Kool Smiles used thin clients from Wyse Technology to deploy a reliable and flexible infrastructure to support the electronic health records systems at new dental offices across the United States. With this roll-out now complete, Kool Smiles has implemented electronic health records across its entire network of providers in 15 states.

"Every year, the InfoWorld 100 Awards celebrate 100 IT organizations that have implemented and integrated technologies in innovative ways in pursuit of concrete business goals," wrote InfoWorld's Jason Snyder about the annual awards listing.  "These 100 real-world projects stand as proof that striking a new path in IT can reap deep organizational rewards."

"Kool Smiles is tremendously proud that our technical achievements have been recognized by InfoWorld," said Dr. David Strange, Chief Dental Officer of Kool Smiles.  "This award helps substantiate our investment in smart, innovative, healthcare technology in our goal to provide quality oral health care to patients in underserved communities nationwide.  Wyse solutions have helped us optimize the productivity of our staff and have saved us huge sums of money we'd otherwise would have spent on hardware, software, and PC support."

Kool Smiles' leadership team had a vision that went far beyond building one or two successful practices.  They sought to design an organization that could scale to provide dental services to underserved communities across the U.S., and began by defining the qualities they would need from their technical infrastructure: reliability, security, scalability, and low total cost of ownership (TCO).

"Kool Smiles has stated that their goal is nothing less than solving the U.S. oral health care crisis," said Maryam Alexandrian, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Channels at Wyse Technology.  "Through the recognition of prestigious awards such as the InfoWorld 100 we are proud to see Kool Smiles being recognized for what they have already accomplished and for their continuing efforts."

At Kool Smiles' class-one data center in Atlanta, applications are delivered to approximately 2,100 Wyse thin clients at offices across the country.  Wyse Device Manager management software helps IT staff manage device policy, configuration, and assets in real time, as well as provide remote imaging, optimization, and administration delegation.

Each exam room has a Wyse thin client running Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with dual LCD monitors.  Doctors and hygienists use these more powerful devices to run two applications on a split screen, simultaneously viewing X-ray records and medical information including dental charts. The system helps them chart patient care, file treatment plans, and manage authorizations.
