New Client Virtualization Software from Wyse Technology Extends Life of Existing PCs
Solution Not Only Extends PC Life, Adds Functionality for Use with Virtual Environments
SAN JOSE, Calif. –
09/01/2009 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing and client virtualization, today announced Project Borg, the codename for its new client virtualization software to extend the lifespan of a personal computer, optimizing and configuring it to deliver a superior Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) experience.
With the ongoing economic downturn, companies are looking to stretch their dollars and extend the life of existing capital assets. Increasingly, the hidden costs of PCs are emerging as a problem within the enterprise. While the economy has generally hampered buying of new technology, it has helped companies realize that the best control over their environment and long term strategy is to move to virtualized environment. Wyse has responded to this challenge with a new solution enabling companies to leverage their existing PC's for 4-6 years, instead of the need to replace them at the typical 3-4 year mark.
Not only does Borg help break the vicious cycle of PC replacement, it does so simply and efficiently. IT departments will see that Borg not only helps solve the problem, but is also easy to install and manage. Borg includes automatic management and Wyse's award-winning TCX virtualization software, providing the best end user experience connecting to virtualization solutions from Citrix, VMware, and Microsoft. The protocol agnostic technology adds functionality and improves user experience in four key areas: Multi-display support, multimedia, richer sound, and support for USB peripherals, as well as adding Wyses award winning Collaborative Processing Architecture (CPA). CPA intelligently divides rich media application workloads between the server and client, reducing the need for larger servers and networks, while delivering the best virtual client experience yet.
"When Borg becomes commercially available in late 2009, enterprises will be able to immediately gain the benefits of VMware View for desktop virtualization and contain costs by leveraging the investment in existing PCs. Down the road, when the PC must be replaced, it can seamlessly be replaced with a Wyse thin client," said Patrick Harr, vice president of enterprise desktop marketing, Desktop Business Unit, VMware. "No configuration changes are required and organizations will be up and running with a virtualized desktop environment."
"In todays economic environment, IT organizations cannot afford to rip and replace existing PC hardware, but still need to deliver new applications to meet business needs. Wyse's Project Borg rejuvenates and simplifies older PCs, enabling customers to adopt desktop virtualization at a lower up-front cost ," said Raj Dhingra, group vice president and general manager, XenDesktop product group at Citrix. "With the built-in Citrix Receiver for Project Borg, IT can deliver new applications or desktops as a service using Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop, and enhance data security while extending the life of their existing PCs by two to four years."
"IBM is pleased to see that Wyse Technology is extending its expertise in thin computing software to the PCs," said Arthur Chiang, VP of End User Services Portfolio Management at IBM Global Technology Services. "Project Borg builds upon existing Wyse virtualization software products, which further eases the transition from PC architecture to VDI infrastructures.
Weve seen a great deal of interest from companies looking to lower the overall TCO of their computing infrastructures, but without making sacrifices to quality or end user experience, said Guy Lunardi, director of Client Preloads at Novell. By repurposing PCs into thin clients, Project Borg leverages Linux to help to reduce costs while simplifying the move to VDI.
"Borg is a relatively simple decision today with enormous implications for tomorrow," according to Jeff McNaught, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer at Wyse Technology. "Borg continues Wyse's progressive vision and strategy to help companies do more with less by leveraging their existing technology."
Project Borg is being demonstrated at the VMworld show in San Francisco, CA, August 31st September 3, and will become commercially available from Wyse and its resellers worldwide later in 2009.
