Wyse, AMD Work to Eliminate Digital Divide: Deliver Thin-Computing Solutions
Wyse to Team with AMD in 50x15 Initiative to Bring Internet Connectivity to High-Growth Markets
SAN JOSE, Calif. –
11/02/2005 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today announced a collaboration with AMD (NYSE: AMD) through which the companies will deliver thin computing solutions to emerging markets. As part of the teaming, Wyse, with its Digital Inclusion program, joins forces with AMD in the 50x15 initiative to empower 50 percent of the worlds population with affordable Internet access and computing capability by the year 2015.
Wyse's Digital Inclusion program was launched with e-Governance projects in India in June 2005, and is also now underway in Uganda, where Wyse partner Inveneo (www.inveneo.org) has deployed solutions based on Wyse S50 Linux-based thin clients. These systems, leveraging AMD Geode processors, are the computing component for Inveneo's Solar Power Communication Systems, which are designed to run in alternative power environments, provide both computer and telephone access via wireless networking, and in turn enable a variety of educational and social services for villagers. AMD and Wyse plan to replicate similar programs globally as part of the Wyse Digital Inclusion program and AMD's 50x15 initiative
Connecting billions of people to the Internet during the next 10 years will require multiple technologies and solutions that differ from region to region. As one of the core solution offerings in the 50x15 framework, thin computing solutions higher reliability and lower cost when compared to personal computers makes them ideal for rural and diverse environments. With simplified management and solutions comprising local services and content, Wyse thin computing solutions help deliver digital access to the developing world. "When disconnected citizens gain access to computing technology, information and services, they become empowered members of the global economy capable of utilizing local government and private sector services such as banking, healthcare and public records," said John Kish, President and CEO, Wyse Technology. "Beyond providing Internet access, technology must be easy to deploy and not place the burden of understanding and maintaining complex computer systems on the local people. AMD's 50x15 initiative is a great foundation and framework for our efforts to leverage the thin computing model to meet the needs of the global population."
"Providing Internet access to 50 percent of the global population by 2015 can only happen through the deployment of simple, reliable and sustainable technology solutions," said Dr. William T. Edwards, Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, AMD. "As the industry leader in thin computing platforms, Wyse provides cost-effective and durable solutions well-designed to help eliminate the digital divide."
Through the 50x15 initiative, AMD and its partners are working to create a series of reference architectures, or solution "capsules," which will be made available through multiple delivery channels to create sustainable businesses in high-growth regions of the world. As part of the collaboration, Wyse will provide technology and engineering expertise for the "thin computing" capsule, providing global organizations useful blueprints which can be easily adapted for specific needs. Wyse and AMD also will collaborate on marketing and distribution tasks.
