WellSpan Health Saves $1 Million on Information Technology Costs with Server-centric Computing from Wyse Technology

WellSpan Employees Provide Better Customer Service Through Improved Communication and Information Access

Wyse Technology, the domain experts in server-centric computing (SCC), today announced that Wellspan Health has saved more than a million dollars in IT and productivity costs by deploying Wyse's server-centric computing solutions throughout their hospitals and medical group offices in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Wyse Winterm thin clients and Wyse™ Rapport® thin-client management software help WellSpan Health maximize the effectiveness of their IT budget, reduce computer maintenance, deliver easy access to centrally managed information and protect the privacy of patient information and medical records in accordance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Wellspan Health is the largest healthcare provider in south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, with 8,000 physicians, employees and volunteers. WellSpan serves more than 450,000 people through 24 primary care offices, 13 specialty care offices, 31 outpatient sites, two hospitals and six retail pharmacies. As WellSpan grew, the organization needed to deploy an IT system that fit within tight budgets and could be maintained by a limited staff. WellSpan also needed to ensure the highest levels of reliability to ensure unimpeded access to important patient information, while maintaining the highest levels of data security for confidential patient information.

"We considered personal computers, but in our evaluation, we realized that the cost of having to touch every desktop to load applications and constantly update them would be enormous," said William "Buddy" Gillespie, Chief Information Officer at Wellspan Health. "Now we simply load our applications onto Citrix servers and provide thin client access to the centralized applications through the Wyse devices."

John Coleman, manager of technology services, said, "We don't have to worry about viruses like MyDoom, or computers freezing up and not working. The cost and time savings have been almost immeasurable."

Wellspan Health has deployed approximately 600 Wyse Winterm 1200LE thin clients in medical group offices, at nursing stations and for employees who access training programs. Nurses access a secure, central database of patient information, eliminating the risk of someone stealing patient information if a computer is somehow stolen. Physicians can access information from stations throughout the healthcare enterprise, so vital patient information is only a few steps away.

"We plan to continuously deploy Wyse thin clients over the next three years, with a goal of 1,000 users empowered each year," said Mark Jacobs, Director of Technology Services. "As a result of the implementation, IT support costs have dropped and WellSpan is no longer locked into the ongoing PC replacement cycle. We've reduced our desktop cost per user by more than 50 percent by using the Wyse thin client option as opposed to PCs."
