Wyse Winterm Thin Clients Contribute to Energy Savings Plan for Contra Costa County in California
California County Estimates Annual Cost Savings Of Approximately $150,000 Using Thin Appliances Instead Of Personal Computers
San Jose, CA –
06/14/2001 -
- Wyse® Technology, the worldwide leader in thin-appliance computing, today announced Contra Costa County in California is saving approximately $150,000 a year in electricity costs by utilizing 500 Wyse Winterm thin appliances rather than personal computers. Contra Costa County estimates an average savings of 90 watts per hour per Wyse Winterm thin appliance, with local energy costs estimates at 0.14/watt per hour. As energy costs in California continue to fluctuate, the County's energy savings could potentially increase beyond the $150,000 per year that is currently be estimated. "We didn't foresee the energy crisis when we started purchasing Wyse's Windows terminals back in 1997, but now, we are really reaping the benefits of the low power consumption of these devices," said Steve Steinbrecher, Chief Information Officer of Contra Costa County. "The ability to consume less electricity has turned out to be yet another benefit among the many that we have realized from our increasing use of thin-client technology." Since the beginning of the year, the state of California has had 38 days of stage three alerts, as reported by the California Independent System Operator (ISO) in an updated report released on May 22, 2001 (www.caiso.com). The alerts have resulted in a greater need for businesses to conserve energy by looking at all facets of their operations, from business and manufacturing hours, to their IT systems. Wyse Winterm thin appliances are desktop devices that run popular Windows applications from central servers and display the applications on a monitor. They use energy-efficient National Semiconductor Geode™ processors and have no internal moving parts such as fans or disk drives, enabling the devices to use only seven to 10 watts of electricity per hour. This is in comparison to personal computers that can use as much as 200 watts per hour. "The California energy crisis is certainly not something that will be solved overnight, and even when there is relief, energy efficiency will continue to be of paramount importance not only in California, but throughout the United States," said George Skaff, vice president of worldwide marketing for Wyse Technology. "Contra Costa County is a prime example that other counties should follow helping to provide energy relief for the citizens of California, and demonstrating one potential long term solution to some of our state's energy challenges." RYNO Technology, a Wyse gold reseller, has set up thin-client applications for more than 1,500 county employees using Wyse Winterm thin appliances in conjunction with Microsoft Windows® 2000 Terminal services and Citrix™ MetaFrame® software. As old PCs break, they are replaced with the more cost-effective Wyse Winterm appliances. "There is no question that purchasing Windows terminals is much more environmentally friendly than purchasing a PC," said Steve Kaplan, president of RYNO Technology. "Contra Costa County was the first California county to embrace thin-client technology on a broad scale and they are now reaping the savings from reduced energy usage as well as the significant other economic benefits."
