"With hundreds of California businesses running thousands of computers each day, the use of thin appliances would not only mean less of a drain on California's sparse energy reserves, but could translate into tens of thousands of dollars in annual savings for businesses," said George Skaff, vice president of worldwide marketing for Wyse Technology. "We are pleased that the President and Governor Davis had the opportunity to view a real technological solution for energy conservation not only in California, but across the nation. Appliance-like computing devices such as our Winterm thin clients are the wave of the present, not just the future, for businesses, education and even consumers who want to help conserve energy and save money." Since the beginning of the year, the state of California has had 38 days of stage three alerts, as reported by the California Independent System Operator (ISO) in an updated report released on May 22, 2001 (www.caiso.com). The alerts have resulted in a greater need for businesses to conserve energy by looking at all facets of their operations, from business and manufacturing hours, to their IT systems. Wyse Winterm thin appliances are desktop devices that run popular Windows applications from central servers and display the applications on a monitor. They use energy-efficient National Semiconductor Geode™ processors and have no internal moving parts such as fans or disk drives, enabling the devices to use only seven to 10 watts of electricity per hour. This is in comparison to personal computers that can use as much as 200 watts per hour.
